Malin Head on a gorgeous spring day. The Western edge of Europe, My Paradise.

The starting point for my next piece of work about edges

I have a personal link to the northwest edge of Ireland. My brother died there 33 years ago, falling off a cliff and drowning in the sea. He died at the very famous Malin head. If you are a radio 4 listener , you will recognise that name as part of the shipping forecast. I listen to the shipping forcast regularly because it reminds me to think of him. But It has also ignited an interest in the geographical edges of Europe and the seas.I have a long term research project about this which is currently bubbling away in the background whilst I make other things happen. However, it keeps reappearing when least expected. It is like a benevolent spectre. I seem to connect it with other things.

John Akomfrah and Coco fusco have influenced the thinking around this concept intensely.

The waves in both their works speak to me...because they are frightening and marvelous...one day the sea will tame us.
